Preserving encrypted archives across decades
Long-term preservation is an operating process, not a one-time copy. An archive can be cryptographically secure and still become unrecoverable because of physical degradation, lost context or obsolete interfaces.
Keep more than the payload
A useful custody manifest records media identifiers, capacity, interface, observed condition, logical layout, encryption implementation, hashes, acquisition method and the authority governing retrieval.
Verify without exposing
Periodic integrity checks can confirm that preserved ciphertext still matches the accepted record. These checks do not require decryption and should not turn offline archives into permanently connected systems.
Plan migrations
Copies should be refreshed before media failure rates or reader scarcity create an emergency. Migration must preserve the original byte sequence, update the custody record and retain enough redundancy to detect errors.
Reassess feasibility deliberately
Hardware-readiness reviews should be archive specific. Improvements in accelerators or computing architecture matter only when they reduce the actual workload enough to meet the owner’s time and budget constraints.
