What determines whether bespoke decryption is feasible?
A statement that an archive is “encrypted” is not enough to estimate recovery. A useful assessment begins with the exact implementation and the evidence surrounding it.
The cryptographic profile
The algorithm, mode, key length, password-based key derivation settings, software version and storage layout all matter. Two archives described as AES-256 can present entirely different recovery problems.
Available leverage
Partial credentials, old key stores, configuration backups, known files, predictable headers and representative non-sensitive samples may help validate candidates or avoid unnecessary work. These details should be described in the initial RFP but secrets should only be transferred through an agreed secure channel.
Media condition and scale
Damaged disks and incomplete arrays may require data recovery before any cryptographic work begins. Archive size affects imaging, verification, working storage and the time required to validate an outcome.
Economics and objective
A project should target a defined business outcome rather than “everything.” Identifying the required files, records or date range can reduce cost. The proposal can then use technical milestones and decision gates instead of pretending that every recovery attempt has a guaranteed result.
